Flying Gear & Personal Equipment - Page 5

RAF Irvin Jacket early wired pattern - Near mint - Largest size

Electrically Wired Thermally Insulated Flying Suit, Jacket. Irvin Jacket. This jacket is a very rare find being not only the largest size (8) made it is also all but unworn. I could describe it as mint with only very slight discolouration of the leather from storage.

It is very unusual in that the wiring loom is completely original to the jacket having never been removed (most wired jackets have had the wiring stripped out) Both of the sleeve plugs are in place.

Physically it measures approximately 50” so should be suitable for around a 44 - 46” chest.  It is early wired example with single panel fronts and just one centre seam on the back of the jacket.

Fitted with an integral wiring loom within leather channels sewn along each sleeve and across the lower back to enable the use of R.A.E. heated gloves. A short umbilical cord connected the jacket to matching trousers via a 2-pin socket......Another umbilical connected the wearer to the aircraft via a larger alloy 3-pin plug (5c/2202).

The leather is in excellent overall condition, as is the very dense fleece internally.

All seams appear good and tight.

The original “DOT” single trunion zips are in place a work perfectly.

The very rare collar elastic strap is likewise in place although lacking a little in elasticity it is original to the jacket.

A very rare opportunity to purchase an early Wired Irvin in near un-issued condition. A jacket that would be near impossible to upgrade.
